Tools of the Trade Artist Profile: Mika Aono

Mika Aono started drawing at a young age and after joining an art club at 10, she began oil painting. From there she learned drafting, ceramics, photography, fibers, graphic design, sculpture and printmaking. Mika truly does it all. Looking at her online portfolio, you can view incredible art installations, prints, 2D and 3D works.

When asked which tools she uses Mika says, “I LOVE Resingrave and engravers from EC Lyons. I know I’d look very nerdy, but I can’t do without my magnifying visor. Bandsaw and my pink hammer. Etching ink from Charbonnel. Handmade Gampi. Sakura microns and Energel pens. I can keep going...”

In addition to working as an artist, Mika also manages the Printmaking and Fibers studio as a technician in the Art Department at the University of Oregon.

Mika draws her inspiration from the “colors and patterns found in nature and urban landscape, overheard conversations, anything that speaks to my senses.”

Words of Wisdom from Mika:

I'm still struggling. After many rejection letters, I tell myself just keep making; be true to what I really want to make and keep making. Cherish the process. Be sensitive, kind and giving.
