Commencement Ready: Your Grad Cap!

It’s that exciting time of year again for students in their final year of school at the University of Oregon. They are picking out outfits, collecting cords, and making plans with family all in preparation for graduation. Everything is planned out down to the minute. But there’s one detail that most students haven’t thought about since their high school graduation: the cap. The cap, or mortarboard, is the nightmare of graduation for many students who are hoping to show up in style on their big day. “How is it worn?” “Which way does it go?” “Which side does my tassel go on?” “Do I even have to wear it?” are only half the questions I’ve heard about the dreaded cap in the last month. Luckily, we have the solutions to all your headdress distress!

How do you wear a mortarboard?

The traditional way that the cap is worn is with the point facing forward on your forehead. But, graduates often like to switch it up by wearing the cap further back on their head and holding it in place with bobby pins or using a device like the grad cap remix to make sure your cap stays on your head the way you like it.

What side does your tassel go on?

Your tassel sits on the right side of the cap before you graduate and is then moved to the left after completing the ceremony. At the University of Oregon, each degree has a specific color of tassel assigned to them. These colors can be found here .

Do you have to wear your cap?

Graduates are not required to wear any graduation regalia, but it is encouraged!
